Super Mega Space Blaster Special Turbo Review Scores

Super Mega Space Blaster Special Turbo Blasts on to Switch, PS4 & Steam

Super Mega Space Blaster Special Turbo blasts its way on to Nintendo Switch, PS4 and Steam to a stream of very positive reviews. It seems that the game is as addictive as we feared as players are reporting that hours pass when they only intend to play for a few minutes. This means that all our hard work, sleepless nights, and coffee bills over the past few months have been worth it. We have indeed created a game with that nostalgic, ‘just one more go’, retro feeling. It’s not just a simple clone of a retro shmup either. Super Mega Space Blaster Special Turbo blends retro gameplay from games like Asteroids and Super Fantasy Zone with more-modern game mechanics from games like Geometry Wars and Super Stardust HD. The result is an addictive frantic retro space blaster which is easy to pick up and play but very difficult to master.

“Super Mega Space Blaster Special Turbo is simple, addictive and most importantly a blast to play. A lot of effort has gone into making this game, borrowing from classics but adding its own spin at every opportunity. There is a bucket load of content to keep you interested and the hook of ‘just one more run’ will have you coming back for more. Super Mega reaffirms the notion that a budget price point doesn’t have to mean corners are being cut.” – 8/10

A COFFEE FUELLED RETRO SPACE SHOOTER

The game was designed and made from the ground up by solo developer Ste Wilson. He made everything from the pumping 80’s inspired synth-pop soundtrack (under his music maker pseudonym Electric Fan Death), to the hand-drawn graphics, to the code behind the addictive gameplay mechanics, and all in only a few months. The game is a true demonstration of what can be achieved with a limited budget, a lot of coffee, and a stubborn streak.

“All in all, this is a super addictive little retro-inspired title that, while perfectly suited to playing in quick five or ten-minute bursts, can, if you’re not careful, suck you in for hours on end with its one-more-go score chasing and achievement completing appeal… it should offer most an absolute bargain.” – 4/5

MEGA BANG FOR YOUR BUCK

Super Mega Space Blaster Special Turbo offers a lot of bang for your buck. With 5 game-modes, 15 unique space blasters (ships), 40+ challenges, online leaderboards, an exclusive space blaster for every platform, and an original retro synth-pop soundtrack there is a lot of content for less than 5 dollars, or 4 pounds if you’re in the UK. Couple that with the unique platform specific features the game supports. Like all 3 play modes and the ability to play local 2 player with single horizontal Joy-Cons on Switch. The fact that the game has 36 trophies including a platinum on PS4 and has 4K support on PS4 Pro. And if Steam is your platform of preference then you’ll get Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud Save, and Steam Remote Play Together. What ever your platform of choice you’ll get a great retro space blasting experience that makes use of its unique features.

“Visually, it’s an indie treat. It’s not a typical pixel art budget title but hand-drawn. For the price, it’s a no-brainer if you’re up for a classic shooter in the mould of Asteroids. There aren’t any gimmicks here, just quality gameplay mechanics that will have you coming back for repeat plays… an excellent title for the Switch.” – 4/5

IN WITH THE RETRO… IN WITH THE NEW

The game was inspired by retro classics like Asteroid, Robotron 2084, and Super Fantasy Zone. This can be seen from the distinctive Super Fantasy Zone look of the boss. This old-school retro gameplay was blended with modern space shooter mechanics from games like Geometry Wars, Super Stardust HD, and Resogun. The idea for the synthetic AI voice for your space blaster came from games by House Marque. We expanded the idea allowing the player to select from a number of voices. Both male and female are available each with their own distinct accents. These voices give you crucial information mid-action preventing the need to constantly look at the HUD.

Saving humans is the order of the day in Resogun. In Super Mega Space Blaster Special Turbo’s ‘Save The Colony Mode’ rescuing cute astronauts (called blastronauts in the game) is the aim of the game. You can even hear their high pitch shouts of “Help me!” as they come on-screen. For more details on the retro and modern inspirations behind the game check out our retro roots article.
